A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
