{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation occurred on the third lap when marshals were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an early pitstop to change his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Immediately after, Racing Bulls driver Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just run across the track in that manner. I have no idea why, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the events
"Following a turn one incident, race control was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"In the third rotation, marshals were alerted and put on alert to enter the track and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was displayed in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred following that moment"
