India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Smog After Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of the city registered an air quality index above 500, which equals ten times the safe limit recommended by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above safe limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts
Since 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that covers the capital as colder weather sets in.
Nevertheless recently, the current local leadership approached the highest court to propose a modification of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Legal Verdict and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during limited hours throughout the Diwali.
On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the capital showed air quality spiking around late evening to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least three years.
International Effects
The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the celebrations.
Persistent Pollution Problem
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have continued as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak readings ever documented in China's capital, which was previously considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The situation in the capital is caused by a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, generating hazardous haze that then gets trapped over the city as colder air descends.
Public Health and Financial Toll
The economic and health consequences on the approximately 33 million residents living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to numerous studies.
The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for 10,000 premature deaths per year in Delhi.
