If you're wanting a horror-slasher flick that provides guilty pleasure while making you wince, it's likely Bone Lake has grabbed your interest. A recent scary film from filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan arrived at theaters on the third of October with an ridiculous concept and a suggestive title to match.

A Blend of Humor and Horror

With a name like Bone Lake and an introductory scene featuring characters sprinting completely nude through the forest—only to be shot with a bow in sensitive areas—one can guess there's a lot of comic relief in the film. Even, the final scenes, which show the central pair exhausted and injured yet laughing uncontrollably side by side, have a feeling of macabre comedy.

You would need to discover a reason to chuckle over, also, if you endured what Diego and the character Sage experience in Bone Lake. A duo riddled with relationship problems from the get-go—lack of communication, disappointing physical relations, an unequal share of money pressures, you name it—their bond is strained when additional characters, the character Will and Cin, gatecrash their romantic weekend.

A Dark Shift

What initially appears to be a conflict of opposites between the duos—Diego and Sage are uncomfortable and everyday people, whereas Cin and Will have a wealthy, luxurious lifestyle and are seen kissing on every surface possible—takes a dark turn as the weekend progresses. Will and Cin prey upon Sage and Diego's fears in their partnership. They tell untruths and talk about the other couple, alleging to be aware of an infidelity and further conflicts.

These doubts burst in the most monumental way conceivable when Sage and Diego learn that Cin and Will are not merely here at Bone Lake by mistake: they are the owners and have been enticing duos to the property in order to get them to be unfaithful on their loved ones. The reason? As Will and Cin are truly brother and sister. Subsequent to their forbidden relationship was found out by their parents and they were split apart unwillingly, they chose to get back at the world (including their relatives). If the society rejected them simply for their desired relationship, then they'll oppose the everyone. Cin and Will's objective is to show a reflection to all the duos they ultimately end up murdering, in an endeavor to show that their bond is no less real (or invalid) as the connection of these other couples they try to split.

Surprising Strengths

However, what Will and Cin don't take into account is that Diego and Sage, regardless of their poor dialogue with one another, do care for and love each other. It just took having a murderous couple try to split them apart and kill them to realize it. While it appears grim, it is not shown that way. Bone Lake's tone is leaning toward comedy than actual fear.

The story ends with Diego and Sage working together to get away from Will and Cin's deadly plans. What's interesting is that while, at the start of the movie, you sense a huge gap in the partnership between Sage and Diego in relation to Cin and Will, by the end, Bone Lake turns it on its head. Will and Cin split up to hunt Sage and Diego, but Sage and Diego are interacting improved by this point. They collaborate to kill the character Will with a chainsaw. They next attack the character Cin, who meets her grisly end at the bottom of Bone Lake's lake—but not before the character Diego reclaims the engagement band destined for the character Sage that the character Will had swiped and presented to Cin.

Consequences

After all the chaos of their double murder, drenched in bodily fluids, Diego and Sage rest side by side on the back of a vessel. Unexpectedly, this is the nearest they've connected since the beginning of the movie, given that all their partnership issues have been exposed for the two to observe, and all they have to hold onto are their injured and sore bodies. As though to confirm their new closeness and deep connection of one another, Diego leans over to put the engagement band on Sage's hand and, when she rotates to examine it in the illumination, the couple break into laughter.

It's not hard to understand the reason: When, the character Will proposed to the character Cin, it was a picturesque, affectionate instant. Whereas the character Diego repeats the act for the character Sage, they've recently survived a horrific ordeal. And yet, Diego's engagement question to the character Sage is not grounded in falsehoods, only the awareness that they've survived the worst ordeal of their existence and, following all that, they yet desire to share the rest of their life with each other.

However, as filmmaker Mercedes Bryce Morgan clarifies, the ending is not a guarantee of a happy ever after for Diego and Sage.
