Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.
One snub did the trick. A second one and it could have seemed spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require the involvement of Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.
Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Personal talent matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when fame dominates. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had much to ponder after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup without him. He saw the young talent excel as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for his club versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have put his tournament chances hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on frightening rivals instead of teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that his period out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield for the 22-year-old after showing that he is unafraid to drop big names.
“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Bellingham just has that aggression. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone must support him and establish an environment where he can [have] his drive against rivals and for the objectives we are working towards as a team.”
The star dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Well, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of support and direction. Foden has not played for England since March and has found it hard to reach his best recently but Tuchel was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.
The question, though, is how to use the various creators at available. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping the captain's game as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will compete with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space on your best position, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this fantasy about him for years. In my view it fits his style best.”
He agreed there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a certain structure, with a defined role. Believe he profits a lot from clarity. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?
Tuchel talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a extended list of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Interestingly, he hinted at using Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a moment to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match against the Scots in over a year ago to discover the one and only time in 35 games for England when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“At this point eventually it falls to the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to be blunt. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin against the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him onside but he will be watching him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an even better one.
