Zelenskyy States Readiness for War-Time Vote Following Criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he is willing to organize a national election during the current war, provided that Ukraine's parliament and international allies approve. This comment follows claims from Donald Trump that he was clinging to power.
Visibly annoyed by the intervention from abroad, Zelenskyy underscored that "The decision for the citizens of Ukraine, rather than for individuals from other nations, with all appropriate respect to our allies."
However, he vowed to examine avenues for carrying out a vote in the coming months. "Because this issue is brought up by the President of the U.S., our ally, I will reply succinctly: look, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy remarked on Tuesday evening.
"Moreover, I am requesting ... the U.S. to help me, perhaps in conjunction with European counterparts, to guarantee protection for the polls, and then within the coming two to three months Ukraine will be able to organize the elections. I myself have the desire and preparedness for this," he continued.
The U.S. President's Assertions and The Country's Legal Reality
The comments were expressed by Trump in a rambling interview published by the publication Politico earlier on Tuesday. "They have not held an election in a while," said the American leader. "Understand, they speak of a democracy, but it reaches a point where it's no longer democratic any more."
Zelenskyy's presidential term officially ended in May of last year, but the country's fundamental law bans elections during armed conflict. Furthermore, his political opponents have often said that safety and political considerations do not permit holding an election during hostilities.
"It would only be detrimental," stated a lawmaker from the Holos party. "He's the commander-in-chief, and the country is in a state where we don't have that possibility, whatever problems we might have with him. It would only aid the enemy," he continued.
Logistical and Constitutional Challenges
Zelenskyy identified two key problems that require solutions: the logistical issue of enabling military personnel, millions of displaced people, and those living under occupation to vote, and additionally, how to constitutionally hold elections given that a state of war is in effect.
He asked for guidance from partner nations on securing the elections, and from lawmakers on how to change the constitution to allow a vote. "{I am waiting for proposals from partners, I am awaiting suggestions from our parliamentarians, and I am willing to proceed with the elections," stated Zelenskyy.
Broader Diplomatic Context
Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after completing a series of visits to various EU nations. This occurs while the U.S. administration has reportedly pushing on Kyiv to agree to a ceasefire agreement.
Recently, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., claimed at a conference that Zelenskyy was dragging out the war due to worries of losing power. He also suggested that his father might "withdraw support" from Ukraine if the war continues. "{It's not true. But it's not exactly wrong," responded Trump, when questioned about his son's claim.
It has been suggested that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should cede the eastern territories to secure peace, a move that would be deeply rejected within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is presently no sign that Russia is prepared to sign any agreement, even a deal that might seem beneficial to Moscow.
